Belkin introduces small, fast and powerful GaN wall chargers to Australia

The super-efficient Belkin GaN wall charger range, which promises fast and powerful charging for laptops and smartphones in a compact design, has arrived in Australia.

The gallium nitride (GaN) used in these USB-C chargers is said to lose up to 40 per cent less power and produce less heat than the traditional silicone, so the components can be more tightly packed in a smaller footprint.

There are two units available: a single-port 30W charger and a two-port 68W model. To put this in perspective, most Apple iPhone wall chargers are a mere 5W.

Belkin says the BOOST CHARGE USB-C GaN Wall Charger 30W will charge a MacBook Air from 0-50 per cent in 70 minutes when paired with a USB-C to USB-C cable. It will charge an iPhone 8 or later from 0-50 per cent in 30 minutes when paired with a USB-C cable with Lightning connector.

The Belkin BOOST CHARGE Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger 68W offers the same fast-charging rates as the 30W model but has dual USB-C ports with Intelligent Power Sharing. This means it can identify which ports are in use and either direct all its power to one or share the power between the two.

Even better, it doesn’t just halve the power to each, but works out the most efficient way to share power. Belkin gives the example of charging a laptop or tablet with 50W from one port and a smartphone with up to 18W from the other.
