Dyson Supersonic Travel: Flagship hair dryer is shrunk for life on the go

Dyson has launched a new flagship travel-friendly hair dryer, the Dyson Supersonic Travel hair dryer, which it says is designed to deliver full-performance styling in a significantly smaller, lighter form factor — without sacrificing the brand’s signature focus on hair health.

The standout feature is portability. The Supersonic Travel is 32 per cent smaller and 25 per cent lighter than the original Supersonic, while still offering the same core drying performance. It’s built for carry-on life, with automatic voltage adaptation for use globally – a practical upgrade for frequent travellers who don’t want to rely on inconsistent hotel dryers.

Despite its smaller size, Dyson is positioning this as a true flagship extension rather than a cut-down model. The company says it has re-engineered the device from the ground up for travel, rather than simply shrinking existing hardware. That includes maintaining its high-speed motor and airflow design, alongside the intelligent heat control system that measures air temperature up to 100 times per second to prevent extreme heat damage.  

Excessive heat is one of the primary causes of hair damage, and the Supersonic Travel aims to mitigate that while still delivering fast drying. The result, Dyson says, is smoother, shinier hair without the long-term stress associated with conventional dryers.  

Swap Dyson hair attachments between models

Another notable inclusion is attachment compatibility. The travel model works with existing Supersonic and Supersonic Nural attachments, allowing users to bring their preferred styling tools without investing in a separate ecosystem. It’s a small but meaningful detail.

The launch also reflects a broader shift in how Dyson is approaching beauty tech. Since the original Supersonic debuted in 2016, the company has expanded into a full ecosystem spanning styling tools and hair care products, including devices like the Dyson Airwrap and Dyson Airstrait. The Supersonic Travel fits into that lineup as a more flexible, on-the-go option rather than a replacement for at-home devices.

Dyson is also pairing the new dryer with its travel-sized hair care products, including the Omega leave-in conditioning spray, which is designed to combat frizz and dryness in changing climates. It’s part of a growing push to combine hardware and formulations into a broader “hair system” approach.

From a usage standpoint, the Supersonic Travel is clearly targeting modern, mobile lifestyles, from gym sessions to short trips and long-haul travel. Dyson’s styling ambassadors are already leaning into that narrative, highlighting low-maintenance, “air-sculpted” looks that rely on controlled airflow rather than heavy styling.

The Dyson Supersonic Travel hair dryer is available in Australia for an RRP of $449. It ships with a styling concentrator, and other attachments, including diffusers and smoothing tools, are sold separately.
