Canon launches PIXMA PRO-200 A3 photo printer

The new Canon PIXMA PRO-200 printer is an A3 model aimed at professional and enthusiast photographers.

The company says it uses a new 8-colour-dye ink system, including newly developed magenta and black ink cartridges designed to give an “expanded colour gamut for reds and blues and more faithful reproduction of blacks while also improving black densities”. The tanks are: Y, M, C, PC, PM, Gy, LGy and BK.

Colour matching has also been improved, which means you should get a print with colours that more closely match those on your monitor.

Print resolution is 4800 dpi horizontal and 2400 vertical, with ink delivered from 6144 nozzles. The PIXMA PRO-200 is pretty speedy too, taking 1 minute 30 seconds for an A3+ bordered colour print in standard mode. A black-and-white 11 x 14-inch image on A3+ with a border should take about 2 minutes 55 seconds.

Paper compatibility and handling have been improved, Canon says. The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 printer has a skew correction function for perfect alignment of a range of photo paper surfaces and finishes up to 0.6mm thickness. It also supports panorama-sized printing and gallery wraps.

It has a fairly compact footprint, measuring 639 x 379 x 200mm, and three connection options: USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

The Canon PIXMA PRO-200 supports the company’s Professional Print & Layout PC software, which means that if you’re a photographer who uses the Dual Pixel RAW (DPRAW) function of some Canon EOS DSLRs you can bring out even more detail in your prints.

The software reads the depth map data from DPRAW files and sharpens the printed image selectively in focus areas. Most other options sharpen an image indiscriminately across the frame.

Canon PIXMA PRO-200 price

Canon says the PRO-200 printer will be available from mid-November 2020, with pricing to be set at the dealer’s discretion. That said, Ted’s Cameras is advertising it on their website for $799.95.
